“If I can help provide a place to develop the talent of the future, I think I will have accomplished something.”—Walt Disney
While Walt was referring to CalArts, inspiring the next generation of storytellers and animators was clearly an important part of his legacy. During this interactive teacher workshop, Pixar partners with The Walt Disney Family Museum to share Pixar in a Box with local Title 1 educators. Pixar in a Box (pixarinabox.org), a collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Khan Academy (and sponsored by Disney) is an online resource that allows teachers to explore the academic concepts behind the animation studios’ creative process through a series of video lessons, interactive exercises, and physical activities. Sharing these ideas with their students, educators discover how the curricula they teach in school aligns with Walt Disney’s processes of creating new worlds, animating unique characters, and telling stories through animation. As part of this day-long course, explore the museum’s galleries to learn about Walt’s life story and discover how continued arts education was integrated at his Studio. This teacher program is part of the museum’s ongoing initiative to encourage students to pursue the entertainment arts by arming their teachers with accessible tools and animation resources. Recommended for middle and high school educators.
