Service to the community is an important part of the Legacy of Walt Disney. We honor his legacy in the Bay Area community through The Walt Disney Family Museum Volunteer Program. This year Ruben Raygoza, one of our dedicated volunteers, received the Youth in Action Jefferson Award for his work with students at Wallenberg High School and here at the our museum. The Students In Action Award is given to youth leaders who promote volunteering and train future youth volunteer leaders. “Public service doesn’t necessarily depend on whether you like it or not. It depends on knowing you’re doing the right thing to support the community.”
Ruben began his volunteering work in our galleries and helping at special events. “Last year I was introduced to a list of organizations who needed volunteers over the summer season,” he recounts. “I want to be an Imagineer. I knew that I would benefit from the museum, but at the same time I thought sharing Walt’s story and how he’s inspired me was a fun opportunity too.” Very quickly Ruben’s diverse skills had him supporting multiple departments, including Visitor Services, Collections and Public Engagement where he works alongside our staff to catalogue our growing collection and provide project support for our Public Engagement Programs. “Volunteering at The Walt Disney Family Museum has made a huge contribution to my future goals,” Ruben shared. “It is a place where you’ll meet a lot of great people and learn skills that will be useful in your career.”
At Wallenberg High School, Ruben has promoted volunteerism and community service while completing over 24 hours of classroom leadership training. In addition, Ruben has shared over 150 hours of service time with us here at the museum. Congratulations Ruben for a job well done.
