Goofy is one of the world’s most beloved cartoon characters, and to many, the film that best captures his appeal is Disney’s A Goofy Movie (1995). Filmmakers Christopher Ninness and Eric Kimelton documented the making of this unexpected classic in their new documentary Not Just a Goof (2024), which follows the various challenges and successes of the production and what it took to “stand out above the crowd” as young filmmakers at Disney during its renaissance. Join Kimelton and Ninness with special guests Director Kevin Lima and voice of Goofy and Disney Legend Bill Farmer for a special screening of this documentary and a Q&A where guests will get to truly see “I2I” with the creators of this memorable film.

An autograph signing with Kimelton, Ninness, and Lima will follow the conclusion of this event, exclusive for all program ticketholders.

About the Speakers

Christopher Ninness and Eric Kimelton

Christopher Ninness and Eric Kimelton, two Los Angeles filmmakers, embarked on the documentary project Not Just A Goof (2024) because of the deep impact it had on their lives. They both grew up with the absence of fathers during pivotal moments in their childhoods and found themselves watching the 90s classic, A Goofy Movie (1995) on repeat. It was not until they embarked on the journey to showcase the making of this film that they discovered the universal power of art and how a character as silly as Goofy could be so meaningful. Through their experience of making this film, Ninness and Kimelton are driven to show how the transformative force of art transcends boundaries and speaks to the human experience, making Not Just A Goof a heartfelt testament to the profound impact of creativity on our lives.

Bill Farmer

Bill Farmer has famously performed as the official voice of Disney’s Goofy and Pluto since 1987 and his sterling voice-acting resume includes thousands of leading and supporting roles in film, television, advertising, consumer products, and more. Farmer became the first voice actor to receive the prestigious Friz Freleng Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Animation. Equally distinguished is the Disney Legend distinction, which Farmer received in 2009 alongside beloved entertainment icons Robin Williams and Betty White. Farmer won an Annie Award® in 2014 for his voice work in the wildly popular Mickey Mouse short film series. Further adding to Farmer’s many honors is an Emmy® nomination for his memorable performances in the hit animated series, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Most recently, Bill Farmer was executive producer and on-air host of the television series It’s a Dog’s Life with Bill Farmer for Disney+.

Kevin Lima

Kevin Lima is a director, writer, and producer who traces his fascination with animation back to seeing Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967) on the big screen. During the film, he pointed to the screen and exclaimed to his mother, “I’m going to make that when I grow up!”

An early interest in puppetry, inspired by his grandmother, led him to study acting and theater design at Emerson College in Boston before enrolling at the California Institute of the Arts’ Animation Program. After graduating, he took assignments designing characters and animating for the independently-produced feature The Brave Little Toaster (1987), before joining Walt Disney Feature Animation (know today as Walt Disney Animation Studios).

For the following six years, Lima worked in many different capacities during the renaissance of Disney animation: he worked in animation for Oliver & Company (1988); designed characters for The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), and Beauty and the Beast (1991); and created storyboards for Aladdin (1992). He was offered the director’s chair in 1992 on A Goofy Movie (1995), which led to him co-directing the hugely successful and critically acclaimed Tarzan® (1999).

In 2000, Lima made his live-action feature film debut with 102 Dalmatians starring Glenn Close. He went on to direct Julie Andrews in the made-for-TV movies Eloise at the Plaza (2003) and Eloise at Christmastime (2003), which won him the Director’s Guild of America Award® for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children’s Programs. Disney’s acclaimed theatrical feature Enchanted (2007) was a culmination of all of Lima’s filmmaking experiences, as it contained a mixture of traditional animation, computer-generated animation, and live-action sequences. Currently, Lima and his wife Brenda Chapman—director of The Prince of Egypt (1998) and co-director of Disney’s Academy Award®-winning Brave (2012)—have combined their talents into ‘Twas Entertainment to produce live-action, animated, and hybrid theatrical features.
