Disney Style has been our focus here at The Walt Disney Family Museum throughout April as we look into the evolving design sophistication of Disney animation--specifically brought to the fore with the production of Cinderella. In celebrating the evolution of creativity and design, we were thrilled to get the chance to sit down with Disney Fairy Tale Weddings designer Michael Shettel--Vice President of Design for Alfred Angelo--and pick his brain on what sparks his creativity, and how these beautiful Disney Princess-inspired gowns get translated from off the easel and down the aisle.
WDFM: Do you look to/at original animator’s art for inspiration, and if so, at which type (concept art, storyboard sketches, cels, etc) do you look?
MS: This season I was lucky enough to be invited go through the Disney film archives and view the thousands of pieces of artwork from the original artist and storytellers who created the classic Cinderella film.
I was mesmerized by the original sketches, illustrations and animations used in developing the sets, scenes and characters for the film.
These magical brush strokes and the dream of all that is Disney inspired the 2013 Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Collection by Alfred Angelo.
How do you balance the classic art style with contemporary fashion?
MS: Merging together traditional and modern fashion is an adventure each season. Every bride wants a timeless look but she also wants to dress in the style that is current and fits her personality. Her bridal gown is one of the most important dresses she will wear so it has to be perfect. My love of art, architecture, fashion and photography in combination with my knowledge of fit and bridal craftsmanship allows me to create timeless, youthful gowns that today’s brides love on their wedding day as well as for decades to come in photo albums and keepsake chests.
What is your most popular dress or princess’s style? For which princess is your favorite to design?
MS: The grandeur of Belle, the curve hugging shape of Ariel, and the sparkle and magic of Cinderella make these the most sought after gowns. Every season I'm drawn into the character and spirit of a different princess. Brides are drawn to both the fantasy inspirations and the dazzling beadwork and intricate lace detailing.
The Romantic tulle ball gowns and mermaid shapes bring to life the captivating drama of each Disney Fairy Tale Princess. Each new princess inspired gown becomes my favorite!
Do you look to other types of art for inspiration? If so, what?
MS: The arts are an ever-changing reflection of our environment and the world we live in. I'm inspired not only by the traditional arts but also by my travels near and far. I believe inspiration and art are found everywhere.
