The inspiration of and appreciation for Walt Disney knows no boundaries. The membership at The Walt Disney Family Museum certainly reflects this diversity. Each month, we’ll introduce you to one of our Members, so you can see the varied and frequently fascinating people, who have come together to learn and experience more about the life, work, philosophies, and ideals of Walt Disney. This month, we’d like you to meet Joanne Aldrich, who is one of our amazing FOUNDING members!
Why did you become a member of the Walt Disney Family Museum?
I have long been a great fan of Walt Disney and I thought being a member of a place that would carry on his legacy would be magic. The other plus is that the Museum is close to home. To be a part of his family sharing their memories, mementos, and recollections is just magic.
What do you find the most enjoyable about your membership?
I love getting the newsletters and updates of what is happening at the museum and that so many wonderful events are open to everyone. I especially loved going to the event where you were able to hear his grandchildren speak (Our Grandpa, Walt Disney). Growing up I never really thought about Walt Disney’s real family as I always felt as though he was my grandfather too.
What do you enjoy most about the Museum?
I enjoy all the exhibits; I like looking at the articles on hand that were a huge part of the Disney legacy. However, I cannot look at the last exhibit (gallery 10) anymore as it always makes me cry. I start by warning my guests that Walt's death is told from different sources. I warn them and let them judge for themselves; I am someone who cries easily and have to pass it by-quickly!
How does Walt Disney inspire you?
I have had the wonderful opportunity of working at a local Disney Store since 1994. I get to sprinkle pixie dust everyday--literally... I have it in my pocket! I think that Walt Disney was a wonderful man, a genius. I remember a foreword for a book I read by Diane Disney Miller; she said “Sharon and I knew he was special before we knew he was famous". He wanted to make the world a more magical place. He has given to so many nostalgia, hope, and many fond memories; a time gone by when things were maybe easier for people.
I was once part of a Disneyland parade and I danced with the penguins. It was like I had never walked down Main Street before. I was walking where Walt walked... I am a cancer survivor and I can't even begin to tell you how many people dealing with cancer want to go to Disneyland and, hopefully, even The Walt Disney Family Museum.
I think every day, "What would God have me do?" When I am at work, "What would Walt do?" None of us knows what Walt would do if he were alive now, but I would like to think he would still be in the business of inspiring young people and bringing excellence to all he did.
What was your first Disney inspiration or memory?
I think the Disneyland television show when I was young. I would wait to see what land we would be visiting each week and it looked like such a wonderful place. It is amazing how many wonderful memories are attached to "things Disney". Now we have our own special Disney Museum. I do not get to the museum as much as I would like but I love telling people about it and going when I can.
Anything else you would like to share about yourself?
I have been married for 43 years to my husband, Larry. We have one wonderful daughter Annie, and a Bichon named Emerson.
I have participated eight half marathons including the Tinker Bell Half Marathon and I also twice in the Happiest Race on Earth. I encourage everyone to join in at any of the Disney marathons. They are great fun, encouraging and inspirational!
I am able to cross one thing off my bucket list; I met Dick Van Dyke! He performed at a benefit concert at Pepperdine University. Still need to meet “Mary Poppins” and ride in the Cinderella coach and maybe a just few more.
