The written word carries immense weight and meaning, especially in the unique art form of poetry. Whether a poem is written in limerick, haiku, or sonnet, words can illustrate an image. In this two-week class, learn about rhythm, typography, and how to visually represent and bring to life the meaning of words through animation. After experimenting with 2D digital animation, discover unique ways to develop stylistic designs that reinforce the tone and mood of the text. Follow the process from storyboard to short film as students employ techniques to visually represent or adapt a poem while creating an immersive and emotionally expressive experience.

This class is intended for students with little or no formal animation experience interested in learning the process of animation. Students will work virtually through Zoom in this summer session.

Summer Class Equipment Requirements

Poetry in Animation will be using digital software for exercises and final projects.

Students enrolled in this course will be asked to obtain the following materials before class begins:

  1. Camera/document camera (in addition to the camera they use for Zoom)

  2. Toon Boom Harmony animation software (to run on a Mac or iPad)

Each student will need these items in order to capture their animation and present it in class for review. If you do not have access to one of these devices or are unable to run Toon Boom Harmony on your Mac, please contact us so we may assist you.
