Before Walt and other early animators produced hand-drawn animated short films, innovators in the 19th century created optical toys like the zoetrope. By spinning a zoetrope and peering through the viewing slits, one could watch the images inside move and appear to come to life. Inventions like the zoetrope paved the way for more complex forms of animation to develop in the early 20th century. Journey back in time with us, craft your own miniature zoetrope, and learn how to position your drawings in a sequence so they appear to move on their own with nothing more than a simple spinning motion.

This workshop will be held entirely online using a video conference interface. Students will be expected to have an internet connection, camera, and microphone to communicate with the teacher and other students. Basic materials such as pencils, pens, and paper will be used during the workshop. Any additional materials needed will be communicated by the teacher.
