Millions of children around the world knew him as Uncle Walt, but to Chris, Joanna, Tamara, Jennifer, and Walter Miller, he was Grandpa. In honor of National Grandparents Day, The Walt Disney Family Museum hosted five of Walt Disney’s grandchildren as they reminisced not about the internationally-renowned storyteller, but about the attentive “Grandpa” who, as Tamara Miller recalled, “Appreciated and adored all of us.”

A new audience-participation craze hit America in 2000 when the Academy Award®-winning film The Sound of Music packed theaters and concert halls with a version that had attendees wearing costumes and singing along with their favorite songs. Since then, many musical films have been given the sing-along treatment, including Walt Disney’s masterpiece, Mary Poppins.

“I suppose I’ve always been in love with trains,” Walt wrote, and in October we will celebrate his lifelong locomotive love at The Walt Disney Family Museum, and here on Storyboard. This article appeared under Walt’s byline in the October 1965 issue of Railroad Magazine. Although certainly written by a Studio publicist or staff writer, it is factually correct, and communicates Walt’s thoughts and ideas authentically and accurately.

When Walt Disney made the trip from Kansas City, Missouri to Los Angles, California in July of 1923, he boarded the famed Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe passenger train, the California Limited. Inaugurated in 1892 and surviving until 1954, the California Limited was a true “workhorse” of the famed railroad.
